Six stretches of the River Great Ouse in and around Bedford, managed by Bedford Angling Club since 1872. The club controls varied sections through some of the river's finest natural countryside, including Bromham, Oakley, Biddenham and the Bedford Fenlake beat. Roach are the predominant species by numbers, followed by chub and barbel, with the river classified by the EA as a Class A fishery through Bedford.
Open matches are normally held on:
Central section of the Great Ouse walkable from the Embankment. Closer parking available opposite the Anchor Public House. Access from car park can be difficult when river is in flood as it involves crossing the flood plain. Best access beat for those with limited mobility.
Scenic section at Oakley. Parking at Oakley double bridges. Gates at each end of the section make use of barrows difficult. Banks can get very wet in winter; some bank is undercut — caution advised near the water's edge.
Short section with limited access but a couple of pegs that offer good fishing. Parking near Stafford Bridge.
Found below the bridge at Bromham. Parking near Bromham Bridge. Good access beat.
Unspoilt stretch with long glides offering good sport throughout the year. Walk from parking to the bank is challenging — some distance involved. Parking at angler's own risk.
