About This Fishery

Portna Canal is a short coarse fishing water connected with the River Bann near Kilrea. The canal can fish particularly well when high river levels encourage bream and roach to move into the more sheltered water. Pike follow the shoals and perch are regularly found around the lock area.

  • Beware of strong current and deep water where the canal enters the River Bann.
  • Do not fish upstream of the locks; the rocky banks are inaccessible and dangerous.

  • Anglers aged 12 and over require a DAERA Coarse or Game Rod Licence and a DAERA Coarse or Game Fishing Permit.
  • Maximum daily retention: 1 pike up to 4kg and 4 coarse fish up to 25cm.
